Lunation Shawl Reveal: Crochet Pattern Out Next Week

the curio crafts room thecuriocraftsroom Lunation Shawl crochet pattern wrap

This is a 'Ta-dah!' post :-) I've finished my third shawl design and it's called the Lunation Shawl. Lunation means lunar month and is the average time from one New Moon to the next. It ties in nicely with the names of the other two shawls I designed: the Moonwish Wrap and the Star Beam Shawl.
The Lunation Shawl is an asymmetrical triangle with an edging at the end consisting of 10 large points. The size is generous, measuring 150cm/59in along the straight edge, 185cm/72.8in along the diagonal edge and 122cm/48in along the top edging. Because of its size, you can wear it in a variety of ways, as you can see in the photos below.

As you may have read in my previous post about this shawl, I have a certain philosophy when it comes to designing shawls. I want to create a joyful and relaxing experience for myself and for you when working on larger pieces. I want to see the fabric grow without a lot of counting or making difficult stitches - that's for other projects. So the main part of the shawl is a meditative repetition of V-stitches, but to give it a little pizzaz, I've added a lovely edging.

I'll publish the Lunation Shawl pattern here on my blog next week and in case you need some extra visualisation of the pattern, a PDF with a chart plus step-by-step photos of the edging will also be available in my Ravelry and Etsy shops.

Whirl and Whirlette yarn

Where to shop for Whirl and Whirlette*

These links will take you to the shops' main page where you can do a search for the yarns you'd like.

UK Wool Warehouse (international shipping)

UK Deramores (international shipping)

UK Black Sheep Wools (international shipping)

CA Knotty House (US + CA)

NL Caro's Atelier (The Netherlands)

And available from various other Scheepjes stockists

Both yarns are made from a blend of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, which makes for lightweight and breathable shawls (or any other garments for that matter). Whirl is a gradient yarn with a very generous twist so that it works up really quickly and it helps prevent splitting. Each colour change (and there are many, which I love because it makes the gradient so subtle) is carefully tied to ensure the knot can be discretely hidden within your stitches. So don’t worry if you come across quite a few ”knots” or rather “fluffy bits” because that means one colour thread is replaced by another colour thread that needs to be worked into the yarn.
The Whirlette yarn, which I already used for my Moonwish Wrap, has the same blend but only comes in single colours, matching some of the Whirl shades. Another difference is that the Whirl yarn cakes hold no less than 1000 metres and the Whirlette balls 455 metres.
Both yarns have a beautiful drape and that is definitely something I’d want for my shawl designs.

WIP Report on Crochet Shawl Design Number 3

the curio crafts room thecuriocraftsroom crochet pattern Earthshine shawl wrap

For the last few days I've been crocheting away on my third shawl design of the year. I'm making great progress as I love working on it and can't put it away. Why is that? Well, first of all, it's very relaxing. For my shawl designs I find it really important that they are relaxing and soothing. Making a shawl means sitting down for many hours working your hands and seeing your work grow and I want to make that process as joyful as possible. For me that means minimal counting and just moving my hands watching the stitches create a soft fabric and being in that moment. I also like more complex and complicated designs, but that's a totally different kind of experience for me bringing a different kind of joy and fulfilment. Having said all this, I will add a nice edging at the end that requires some counting because I like to give each shawl a special kind of flair or detail.

The yarn I'm using also makes me want to crochet for hours on end. Perhaps you've already used it yourself: Scheepjes Whirl and Whirlette. The gradient Whirl really makes you want to get to the next colour change as fast as possible and because of its generous twist, it does not split and works up really quickly. You can read more about these yarns below.

Perhaps you can already guess the shape of the shawl from the photos: it's going to be an asymmetrical triangle shawl (with a nice edging as I mentioned earlier) and I plan to finish it just before we head into 2020. I don't know if I have the pattern ready for you by then as well, but if not, it will definitely be available early January, both here on my blog and as a premium PDF for a small fee. 'Premium' means that the PDF will contain a chart, some tutorial photos and written instructions in bullet point format, which makes for easy reading.

See you soon with photos of the finished shawl!

Another Shawl Design in the Making: Pattern Coming Soon

the curio crafts room thecuriocraftsroom crochet pattern shawl wrap
I can’t believe I’m already set to start my third shawl design in about two-and-a-half months’ time. As you may now by now, I’ve planned a series of at least four shawls, each one with a different shape.
The first one, the Moonwish Wrap, has a half-circle/crescent shape and comes in Sizes S and L; the second one, the Star Beam Shawl, has a dragon tail shape with a quirky edging (see photos below). For this third shawl I have an asymmetrical triangle shape in mind. It’s a rather tradition shape I guess, but I’m always looking to add something unexpected and a little different, so let’s see…..

The yarn I’ve selected is Scheepjes Whirl and Whirlette. It’s the first time I’m going to use a Whirl cake and I’m very excited about that. In case you’re not yet familiar with these variegated yarn cakes and their single colour counterparts, the Whirlette, let me show you the great variety in colours available and tell you why these yarns are extremely suitable for shawls.

I plan on using one Whirl plus one Whirlette, as I want a generously sized shawl. As you can see from the shade cards, there are soooo many colours to choose from: 54 Whirls and 19 Whirlettes no less. I went for simple and elegant black/grey/white, but I'm thinking I'd also like to select a more summery combination. But that's something for spring...one shawl at a time please.....

I want to make this a relaxing project – again! That's why there are Tingsha bells in the photo above; Tingsha bells are bells that signal the beginning of a meditation and help focus your attention in the present moment. I want my larger projects to be as relaxing as possible as I know the benefits of mindful crafting are huge. For me, shawl projects calm my mind (most of the time it feels my brain is spinning out of control with lots of creative ideas but also with worry and unhelpful thoughts) and I sincerely hope that working on one of my designs will also benefit you in whatever way possible.

Alright, I’d better crack on so that I can show you some WIP pictures next week and publish the pattern around New Year’s Day!

5dc-popcorn: Work 5dc in same st/sp, remove hook from loop and insert from front to back in first dc made, put loop back on hook and pull through first dc.
picot 2: Ch2, slst through front loop of sc at base of picot. Normally you would work ch2 and then slip stitch through first chain made, but for this picot you slip stitch through the front loop of the sc at the base of the ch2 by inserting the hook downwards (see photo).

Pattern Notes
To get a shawl of the same size as the one in the cover photo (widest point approx. 70cm and length approx. 194cm), you have to work the 6-row pattern repeat 22 times (not including Rows 1-12) and add the final 6-row round-off. If you’d like a shawl that is shorter or longer, simply work the 6-row pattern repeat as many times as needed but always end with the same 6-row round-off.

Yarn details
Our Tribe is a variegated yarn that is beautifully twined, which creates a dappled effect and thus the idea that there are even more than 6 different colours each ball consists of. The more the colours contrast, the more dappled the effect. It's super soft and works up very smoothly and quickly. It consists of 70% Merino Superwash and 30% Polyamide and comes in 100g (420m) balls suitable for hook/needle size 2.5 to 3mm, or even larger when making shawls because that'll result in a beautiful drape. It's machine washable at 40 degrees. Since the day we created the blogger colourways, quite a few new colours have been added to the range and now you can choose from 38 different colours - both variegated and single colours.
