Bobblicity Cowl: Free Crochet Pattern

Free Crochet Cowl Pattern by TheCurioCraftsRoom The Curio Crafts Room Bobblicity Cowl

I love designing shawls, wraps and scarves and now I've added a cowl to my collection: the Bobblicity Cowl. Normally I design small peacock-inspired motifs, but once a year or so I like to make something
a little bigger with a lovely stitch pattern. For this cowl I chose to make a lot of bobbles using Scheepjes Our Tribe yarn. This yarn is so soft and warm, so the large bobbles will feel great against your skin.

Below I have the pattern for you. It's a rectangular cowl that closes with snap fasteners measuring approximately 17 x 62cm / 6.7 x 24.4in but can be adjusted to any size. I worked the cowl double stranded with one ball in a rich peacocky blue (of course) and one variegated ball in beautiful shades of blues and greens. This variegated colourway was named The Curio Crafts Room; you can read here how it got my business name.

You'll find the English pattern below and the Dutch pattern here, but you can also purchase a beautifully laid out PDF pattern in one of my shops.

In my Ravelry and Etsy shops you can purchase a PDF version of this pattern

The advantages of the PDF version are:

  • Clear layout in bullet point format
  • Stitch Chart
  • Instructions how to adjust size
  • Similar graphic design as all of my other PDF patterns
  • You support my work so that I can continue to publish free patterns and offer discount codes
Thank you!

Pattern Notes
The cowl is worked holding 2 strands of yarn together. I used one Scheepjes Our Tribe ball in a variegated colour and one uni-colour ball. To complete a cowl in the size as shown in the photos, you only need 2 balls. The total weight of the cowl is 134g.
Please note that you do not work any turning chains.
It’s advisable to count your stitches at regular intervals as some stitches do not count in the total stitch count of a row and should not be worked into in the next row. These stitches are not listed in the stitch counts. Always discard them when counting your stitches.
Even rows are always worked in back loops of stitches only.
The bobbles are worked on WS rows but pop out on RS.
The cowl does not need to be blocked.
You could easily use other Scheepjes yarns for the cowl, either single or double stranded depending on the thickness of your chosen yarn. Adjust hook size accordingly. but make sure the bobbles are not too tight. Suggested Scheepjes yarn are: Stone Washed, River Washed, Softfun and Terrazzo.

Place the cowl in front of you as shown in the photo below and sew 3 press fasteners to either side. One half of the fasteners are sewn on the WS and the other half on the RS with 4.5cm in between starting at the bottom points. If you fasten the cowl around your neck, it should fit snuggly around it. So, before sewing the press fasteners on, first check how large the neck opening should be for you.
Then sew 4 (or preferred number) buttons wherever you like; they only serve as embellishments.

Our Tribe is a variegated yarn that is beautifully twined, which creates a dappled effect and thus the idea that there are even more than the 6 different colours each ball consists of. The more the colours contrast, the more dappled the effect. It's super soft and works up very smoothly and quickly. It consists of 70% Merino Superwash and 30% Polyamide and comes in 100g (420m) balls suitable for hook/needle size 2.5 to 3mm, or even larger when making shawls because that'll result in a beautiful drape. It's machine washable at 40 degrees. Since the day we created the blogger colourways, quite a few new colours have been added to the range and now you can choose from 38 different colours - both variegated and single colours.

The Bobblicity Cowl: Versatile and Quirky

free crochet cowl pattern by the curio crafts room thecuriocraftsroom Bobblicity Cowl

I'm very happy I can show you the latest design in my crochet shawl series. Well, strictly speaking this isn't a shawl, but hey it'll also keep your neck warm and cosy :) It's so soft with the large textured bobbles so I've called it the Bobblicity Cowl.
In a previous post I already told you the story behind the yarn (read it here) and also that it's a wonderful in-between holiday project that you can make quickly and at the same time really enjoy the rhythm of working all the bobbles.

free crochet cowl pattern by the curio crafts room thecuriocraftsroom Bobblicity Cowl

A versatile and quirky cowl
You can wear the cowl in different ways to suit your style. It closes with snap fasteners and once closed you can then decide how to drape it around your neck. I like to wear it with the closure just below my shoulder, but you can also wear it with the closure at the front for a more cape-like look.
As you can see below the Our Tribe yarn that I used comes in many gorgeous colours, so you can easliy make your own colour combinations. As the cowl is made holding two different colours together, you can create a special effect and make it really eye-catching.
So I think this cowl is very versatile as you can decide how you'd like to wear it and you can make up your own colourway by combining colours; perhaps you prefer highly contrasting shades or more of an ombre effect.
It's also a bit of a quirky cowl with the buttons added. Of course you don't have to sew any buttons on as they are purely decorative, but I like the colour pops. The buttons I used are enameled coconut buttons and have a beautiful shine. You can add as many as you like. I went for an asymetrical look. It would be fun to experiment with placement to create different styles.

Tomorrow I'll have the free pattern for you here on my blog!

Bobble Sneak Peek: Quick, Soft, Colourful, Warm and Cosy

free crochet pattern shawl wrap cowl scarf the curio crafts room thecuriocraftsroom

Yesterday I promised you a sneak peek of my new crochet design using Scheepjes Our Tribe using the colourway that carries my business name The Curio Crafts Room. So here it is! All soft and colourful and warm and cosy and bobbly and......a really quick project :) Aren't the colours fab? The very rich blue matches 'my' variegated yarn perfectly.

Can you tell what it is? Well, in this photo it isn't finished yet, but the end result is simply a little longer than what you see here. It's an ideal in-between holiday project that works up very quickly as I used the yarn double stranded, going for a deep, peacocky blue to match 'my own' variegated yarn. With a 6.5mm hook I worked beautiful, soft bobbles to drape around your neck and to keep you warm both at home and outdoors. Curious to see more? Full reveal will follow very soon!

Yarn combinations
As you can see there are so many colours in this yarn range. It would be fun to make all kinds of different yarn combinations with one variegated ball and one uni-coloured ball.
What about the gorgeous soft shades of 970 and 882? Or the reds in 971 and 877?

New Free Crochet Design on its way using my own The Curio Crafts Room Yarn!

free crochet pattern shawl wrap cowl scarf the curio crafts room thecuriocraftsroom

Exciting!! I've designed something warm and cosy with my own The Curio Crafts Room yarn!
But first, let me tell you how I came to have a yarn named after my crochet business :) As you may know, I'm a Scheepjes blogger and at the end of 2017 Scheepjes had a huge surprise in store for all us bloggers: we could select our own colour palette for a new yarn they had developed. We got to select 6 colours for a variegated yarn that reflected our business or simply our taste. Obviously I went for a peacock palette as most of my designs and the colours I use are peacock inspired and the result is that fabulous ball you see on the left in both photos. The yarn collection is called Scheepjes Our Tribe and there are now 38 colours in total with both variegated and uni-coloured yarns.
If you'd like to read a little bit more about and see pictures of how we selected the colours for our personal yarn, see this blog post.

It's now 2022 and I have to make a confession......I hadn't made anything with the yarn that carries my business name until last week......yep......so it was high time to do that. I designed a beautiful and quick in-between project for the holidays. What I did is, I combined my own yarn with a gorgeously vibrant uni colour called Iris Garden and decided to use them double stranded. Using a 6.5mm hook, I had it finished in no time to wear outside now the weather here in The Netherlands is quite wintery. In case you're curious, I'll show a sneak peek really soon. I'm writing up the free pattern as we speak and it will be available in both English and Dutch in about a week's time.

Pattern Notes
This shawl is worked bottom up to make a symmetrical triangle.
It uses one entire cake of Scheepjes Whirl and is finished with part of a Scheepjes Whirlette cake. I worked the final 14 rows of the triangle in Whirlette and also the Edging. I was left with approx. 34g of the Whirlette cake.
The Edging takes about 8g of Whirl or Whirlette yarn (but the Edging is optional). If you do want to make the Edging, make sure you have at least 8g of yarn left.
The stitch pattern consists of 4 rows that are repeated.

Edging
Rotate work 90 degrees to continue on side of shawl.
Edging is worked into each row end and sts are worked around posts of either dc sts or ch3’s.
Rep the following stitch pattern on both sides of shawl. There’s no edging along the top.
Ch2, 1slst around post of final row worked, ch2, (1sc, picot 2, 1sc) around next post, ch2, 1slst around next post, ch2, 5dc-popcorn around next post, ch2, 1slst around next post, ch2, (1sc, picot 2, 1sc) around next post, ch2, 1slst around next post, ch2, 5dc-popcorn around next post, etc., at bottom point work 5dc-popcorn into magic ring.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Blocking
To get the most beautiful result, the shawl needs blocking. Soak in lukewarm water, gently squeeze water out or roll in a dry towel to remove excess moisture. Pin out to finished measurements and let dry naturally.

Whirl and Whirlette yarn

Both yarns are a blend of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, which makes for lightweight and breathable shawls, or any wearables really. Whirl is a gradient yarn with a very generous twist so that it works up really quickly and it helps prevent splitting. Each colour change (and there are many, which I love because it makes the gradient so subtle) is carefully tied to ensure the knot can be discretely hidden within your stitches. So don’t worry if you come across quite a few ”knots”, or rather “fluffy bits”, because that means one colour thread is replaced by another colour thread that needs to be worked into the yarn. The Whirlette yarn comes in single colours, matching the Whirl shades. Below you can see all yarns available.

The shade cards shows all the 54 Whirl yarn cakes and 44 Whirlettes available.

Zea Mays Shawl: Versatility and Popcorns Galore

Free Crochet Shawl Wrap Scarf Pattern by TheCurioCraftsRoom The Curio Crafts Room

Are you looking for a relaxing summer crochet make that you can wear when the sun goes down? Then my latest shawl design might appeal to you :)
It's a symmetrical triangle worked bottom up and I've named it the Zea Mays Shawl as it has popcorns galore. I love a little bit of texture so each pattern repeat has a popcorn in the centre as you can see in the photo below.
As I mentioned in my previous post, it's a simple yet interesting repeat that works up quickly in the Scheepjes Whirl and Whirlette yarns I used. At the bottom of this post you can read all about these beautiful yarns. But first have a look at the many ways you can wear it and read all about when to expect the FREE pattern.

I not only love a bit of texture, but also versatility. It's great when you can wear a shawl in different ways I think and a triangle shawl is just perfect for that. You can wear it the more 'traditional' way so that you can clearly see the triangle shape, but there are more options. The lovely drape of this shawl makes it very easy to play around with. Have a look at the photos below.

I'm working on the pattern for you right now and will have it ready sometime next week. As with all my shawl designs, I'll publish the pattern here on my blog for free but will also make a beautifully laid out PDF pattern with extras like a chart and close-up photos that you can then purchase in my Etsy and Ravelry shops.
See you next week!
