I love designing shawls in all kinds of shapes and sizes. I've a new rectangular shawl design finished and have ideas for two more that both have a peacock theme ;) Since these are all more for spring and summer, you can expect them in 2024. In the meantime, I have a lovely quick and in-between free pattern for you that's perfect for autumn and winter: The Crinkle Wrinkle Cowl.
Designing cowls is a new love of mine; I made my first one last year in December: The Bobblicity Cowl. For this first cowl I chose to make a lot of bobbles using Scheepjes Our Tribe yarn double stranded and since I so loved to combine the yarn and the resulting textured pattern, I decided to repeat that, but with an entirely new stitch pattern of course! Here's a photo of the Bobblicity Cowl.
And here's the Crinkle Wrinkle Cowl. In the first photo in this post, you see it in a very vibrant colour combination.
Below I have the pattern for you. The Crinkle Wrinkle Cowl is worked in the round and measures approx. 21cm in height and the circumference is approx. 78cm without the fold at the front. With the fold, it's approx. 21cm in height and the circumference at the top is approx. 50cm (not stretched/blocking not required). But it can be adjusted to any size.
The fold is of course the special feature and makes it a unique accessory. This combined with the alpine stitch pattern makes for a beautifully textured and tactile cowl that'll keep you snug and warm.
You'll find the English pattern below and the Dutch pattern here, but you can also purchase a beautifully laid out PDF pattern in my shops.
In my Ravelry and Etsy shops you can purchase a PDF version of this pattern
The advantages of the PDF version are:
- Clear layout in bullet point format
- Chart for the stitch pattern
- Close-up photos of the stitch pattern and how to make the fold
- Instructions how to adjust size
- Similar graphic design as all of my other PDF patterns
- You support my work so that I can continue to publish free patterns and offer discount codes
Thank you!

Pattern Notes
• The cowl is worked holding 2 strands of yarn together. I used one Scheepjes Our Tribe ball in a variegated colour and one uni-colour ball. To complete a cowl in the size as shown in the photos, you only need 2 balls. The total weight of the cowl is approximately 134g.
• The cowl is worked with a 6.5mm hook and the edging with a 6mm hook.
• It’s advisable to count the stitches in the sc rounds regularly to make sure you haven’t forgotten any stitches.
• The cowl does not need to be blocked.
• You could easily use other Scheepjes yarns for the Crinkle Cowl, either single or double stranded depending on the thickness of your chosen yarn. Adjust hook size accordingly but make sure the fabric doesn’t become too tight. Suggested Scheepjes yarn are: Stone Washed XL, River Washed XL, Softfun and Terrazzo.
• Suggested colour combinations: 973 It’s All in A Nutshell + 880 Silver Birch / 977 A Spoonful of Yarn 2x / 971 Jellina Creations + 877 Raspberry Radiance / 981 Marie 2 + 982 Trust and finally 974 The Curio Crafts Room + 884 Iris Garden (I used this combination for my previous cowl design The Bobblicity Cowl – also available on Etsy and Ravelry.
Instructions
With 6.5mm hook and double stranded yarn (hold the two colours together), ch106, close into a ring with slst in first ch, making sure not to twist the foundation chain
Round 1 Ch3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 1dc in each of the next 105 ch around, slst in first dc to close. [106 dc]
Round 2 Ch1 (does not count as st here and throughout), 1sc in each st around, slst in first sc to close. [106 sc]
Round 3 Ch3, FPedc around next dc (= second dc made on Round 1), skip sc behind FPedc just made, *1dc in next sc, skip 1 dc on Round 1, FPedc around next dc (= fourth dc made on Round 1), skip sc behind FPedc just made; rep from * all around, making sure to skip the sc behind each FPedc worked and to skip 1 dc after each dc you worked the FPedc around, slst in top of ch3 to close. [53 dc, 53 FPedc]

Round 4 Rep Round 2.
Round 5 Slst in next sc (= second sc), ch3, FPedc around next dc two rounds down in between first two FPedc made on that round), skip sc behind FPedc just made, *1dc in next sc, skip 1 dc on Round 1, FPedc around next dc on Round 3, skip sc behind FPedc just made, rep from * all around, slst in top of ch3 to close. [53 dc, 53 FPedc]
Round 5 works the same way as Round 3, but now you work the FPedc sts around the dc sts two rounds down that sit in between FPedc sts already made. So you alternate the position of the FPedc sts.
Rounds 6-19 Rep Rounds 4 and 5 a further 7 times, do not close but continue in a spiral.
Round 20 Rep Round 4 once more, do not fasten off if you want to continue in the same colour; if you’d like to work the edging in a different colour, fasten off here.
Edging at top of cowl
Change to 6mm hook
If you decided to use a different colour, join with new colour (double stranded) in back loop of final stitch made on previous round.
The edging is worked in a spiral. Continuing on from final round, work 1sc BLo in each sc around without closing round. Rep once more (or 4 more times as I did on the grey/multi coloured) all around. Close with an invisible join or your preferred joining method. Fasten off.
Edging at bottom of cowl
With 6mm hook, join yarn in joining stitch where you closed the foundation chain into a ring. Work 1sc in each bottom of ch all around. The edging is worked in a spiral, so continuing on from sc round, work 1sc BLo in each sc around without closing round. Rep once more all around. Close with an invisible join or your preferred joining method.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
How to work the fold
Lay cowl flat. Where you joined the cowl in the round is centre back of cowl.
Mark centre front with a pin. Then measure 4.5cm to the left and right of centre pin and also mark with pins. Do this once more, measuring 4.5cm to the left and right of both these pins.
Fold cowl so that outer two pins align with centre pin and middle two pins are now at outer edges of fold. Secure fold with pins. You now have 3 layers held together.
Try cowl on to see if it’s a good fit. You may want to wear a coat to see how the cowl fits then. If necessary, adjust the fold according to neck size and preference.
With double stranded yarn, whip stitch through these 3 layers picking up the loops of the final round of the edging.

Yarn details
Our Tribe is a variegated yarn that is beautifully twined, which creates a dappled effect and thus the idea that there are even more than the 6 different colours each ball consists of. The more the colours contrast, the more dappled the effect. It's super soft and works up very smoothly and quickly. It consists of 70% Merino Superwash and 30% Polyamide and comes in 100g (420m) balls suitable for hook/needle size 2.5 to 3mm, or even larger when making shawls because that'll result in a beautiful drape. It's machine washable at 40 degrees. Since the day we created the blogger colourways, quite a few new colours have been added to the range and now you can choose from 38 different colours - both variegated and single colours.
