Free Crochet Shawl Wrap Scarf Pattern by TheCurioCraftsRoom The Curio Crafts Room

I'm very happy that my collection of shawl designs is growing steadily. I've just finished number 5 (!) and I plan to design more and publish them as free patterns here on my blog.
Below I have the pattern for the Zea Mays Shawl for you. It's a symmetrical triangle shawl measuring approximately 170cm across the top with a 108cm depth of point and is made with 1 Whirl (555 Forbidden Fuchsia) and 1 Whirlette (874 Pomegranate) yarn cake in beautiful pink and fuchsia shades.
You'll find the English pattern below and the Dutch pattern here, but you can also purchase a beautifully laid out PDF pattern in one of my shops.

In my Ravelry and Etsy shops you can purchase a PDF version of this pattern

The advantages of the PDF version are:

  • Clear layout with instructions in bullet-point format
  • Stitch Chart
  • Instructions how to adjust size
  • Close up photos
  • Similar graphic design as all of my other PDF patterns
  • You support my work so that I can continue to publish free patterns and offer discount codes
Thank you!

5dc-popcorn: popcorn consisting of 5 double crochet stitches: work 5dc, remove hook from loop and insert hook from front to back through top of first dc, put loop back on hook and pull through top of first dc

Pattern Notes
This shawl is worked bottom up to make a symmetrical triangle.
It uses one entire cake of Scheepjes Whirl and is finished with part of a Scheepjes Whirlette cake. I worked the final 14 rows of the triangle in Whirlette and also the Edging. I was left with approx. 34g of the Whirlette cake.
The Edging takes about 8g of Whirl or Whirlette yarn (but the Edging is optional). If you do want to make the Edging, make sure you have at least 8g of yarn left.
The stitch pattern consists of 4 rows that are repeated.

Edging
Rotate work 90 degrees to continue on side of shawl.
Edging is worked into each row end and sts are worked around posts of either dc sts or ch3’s.
Rep the following stitch pattern on both sides of shawl. There’s no edging along the top.
Ch2, 1slst around post of final row worked, ch2, (1sc, picot 2, 1sc) around next post, ch2, 1slst around next post, ch2, 5dc-popcorn around next post, ch2, 1slst around next post, ch2, (1sc, picot 2, 1sc) around next post, ch2, 1slst around next post, ch2, 5dc-popcorn around next post, etc., at bottom point work 5dc-popcorn into magic ring.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Blocking
To get the most beautiful result, the shawl needs blocking. Soak in lukewarm water, gently squeeze water out or roll in a dry towel to remove excess moisture. Pin out to finished measurements and let dry naturally.

Whirl and Whirlette yarn

Both yarns are a blend of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, which makes for lightweight and breathable shawls, or any wearables really. Whirl is a gradient yarn with a very generous twist so that it works up really quickly and it helps prevent splitting. Each colour change (and there are many, which I love because it makes the gradient so subtle) is carefully tied to ensure the knot can be discretely hidden within your stitches. So don’t worry if you come across quite a few ”knots”, or rather “fluffy bits”, because that means one colour thread is replaced by another colour thread that needs to be worked into the yarn. The Whirlette yarn comes in single colours, matching the Whirl shades. Below you can see all yarns available.

The shade cards shows all the 54 Whirl yarn cakes and 44 Whirlettes available.
