POUCH PATTERN

Skill Level Beginners

Materials
Yarn:
Bamboo Soft (50% Bamboo, 50% Cotton; 50g/150m)
Yarn amounts needed:
Small Pouch: approx. 33g
Medium Pouch: approx. 55g
Large Pouch: approx. 163g
Colours: See below for information on the exact colours I used and where to shop for Bamboo Soft yarn
Crochet hooks: 3mm or 3.5mm for pouch depending on tension and 2.5mm or 3mm for peacock feather also depending on tension (see Gauge/Tension section below)
1 x stitch marker
Tapestry needle
Ribbon for Small Pouch: 0.5cm x approx. 90cm
Ribbon for Medium Pouch: 0.5cm x approx. 90cm
Ribbon for Large Pouch: 0.5cm x approx. 110cm

Measurements (lying flat)
Small Project Pouch: 13 x 17cm (5.1 x 6.7in) with 3mm hook
Medium Project Pouch: 18 x 21cm (7.1 x 8.3in) with 3mm hook
Large Project Pouch: approx. 27 x 43cm (10.6 x 16.9in) with 3mm hook
Peacock Feather: 4.5 x 5cm (1.8 x 2in) with 3mm hook

Gauge/Tension
For the linen stitch part of the pouch it is important that the fabric is not too stiff so that it has a nice drape. You may either need a 3mm or 3.5mm hook depending on your tension. The bottom of the small pouch (which is worked in sc sts) should measure approx. ∅ 9.5cm, any smaller and the linen stitch rounds will probably be too tight. So it’s advised to make a swatch to see which hook size will work best for you.
For the peacock feathers tension is less critical, but if you tend to crochet loosely then a 2.5mm hook is recommended.

Pattern Notes
Pouch

Up to the decrease round, the pouch is worked in a spiral, which means that you won’t close rounds. Rather, you will continue around making the first stitch of each round in the first stitch of the previous round. It’s a good idea to use a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds: insert the marker in the first stitch of the round so that you know when you’ve finished it and then move it up to the first stitch of the next round.
From the decrease round onwards, rounds are closed with a slst.
A ribbon is woven through dc round 1 for the small and medium sized pouches and through dc round 2 for the large pouch.
French Mini Peacock Feather
There’s a separate PDF pattern for the French Mini Peacock Feather. You’ve received it together with the purchase of this PDF pattern.
The Bamboo Soft colours I used for the little feathers are listed above on page 1.
Sewing the feathers onto the pouch
I’ve sewn the feathers onto the pouch with a few small stitches in the centre and along the outer edge using machine thread in the colour of the pouch.

Next round (starts linen stitch part of Pouch) Please note: Continue to work in a spiral moving the stitch marker up with each new round. 1sc in next sc (= first sc of previous round), pm in this sc, ch1, skip next sc, (1sc in next sc, ch1, skip next sc) around.

Dc rounds 4-13 for Large Pouch Ch3, 1dc in each dc and ch-1 sp around, slst in beg ch3 to close, do not fasten off.

New Crochet Design: The Peacocky Pouch for Gifts or Projects

Free crochet pattern by thecuriocraftsroom gift pouch project pouch home decor peacock feather

Who loves to wrap up gifts? Using gorgeous paper, lots of ribbons, stickers, tags.... It's a craft project in itself, isn't it? But have you ever thought of crocheting a gift pouch? A cute little pouch for a lovely present. Or is the pouch the present ;) It doesn't matter; it's just a fun, quick and relaxing in between crochet project. Or not an in between one, if you want to make a larger pouch.
I've designed this pouch in such a way that you can make it in any size you want. A small size for a small gift or a large size for a different purpose altogether. What about using a larger one as a project pouch?
The yarn I used is Scheepjes Bamboo Soft, a gorgeously soft yarn that creates a perfect drape. You can read more about the yarn in this blog post or scroll down to see all the rich colours available. There are 17 colours to choose from and they're all perfect for peacock feathers.
To embellish it, I've used my first ever free crochet design: the French Mini Peacock Feather. Mini because it's tiny (obviously) and French because I designed it while visiting my friends in France. You can find the pattern for the feathers here. I will publish the pattern for the pouch here on my blog next week. For now I'll show you some photos!Free crochet pattern by thecuriocraftsroom gift pouch project pouch home decor peacock feather
This blue pouch is medium sized: 18 x 21cm (lying flat). Perfect for giving lovely craft gifts like the Cohana tape measure and crochet hooks stand in the photo.

The purple and yellow pouches are small sized: 13 x 17cm (lying flat).Free crochet pattern by thecuriocraftsroom gift pouch project pouch home decor peacock feather

I've also designed a large pouch - 27 x 43cm lying flat - suitable for carrying or storing a WIP.

New Crochet Design with a Peacocky Touch

mini French peacock feather embellishment the curio crafts room free crochet pattern gift or project pouch

Today I can show you a little bit of what I've been working on this past week. It's going to be a new free crochet design with a peacocky touch. The peacock feathers in the picture above may look familiar to you :) I designed these a few years ago and it was actually the first free crochet pattern I published on this blog. Many of you made them and wear them as earrings. Lovely! It's called the French Mini Peacock Feather and you can find the pattern here. I'm going to use these cute little mini feathers to embellish this new design I plan to publish at the end of May.

The yarn I'm going to use for it is Scheepjes Bamboo Soft and in my previous blog post you can read more about it. One of the reasons Bamboo Soft is perfect for this project is that it creates a beautiful drape. And drape is what I need because I'm making gift or project pouches! From cute and small to practical and large. The small ones are ideal for gifts as they work up really quickly and look fab and you could use the larger ones to keep (crochet) projects in.

It's a relaxing make without a lot of counting. You work in a spiral either in sc stitches or linen stitch and the top is simple dc stitches. I've already made a few pouches and have just finished this golden yellow one today and am about the finish a blue one, which I'll show you next week.

Bamboo Blend Yarn for a New Free Crochet Design

free crochet pattern the curio crafts room thecuriocraftsroom home decor

Isn't this bowl of yarn delicious? A beautiful palette of rich colours for my next free crochet design. I'm not sure yet whether I'll be using all of these balls, but definitely the deep purple and the teal.
The yarn is Scheepjes Bamboo Soft, a gorgeously soft bamboo and cotton blend that I'll be working with for the first time. The plan is to make a cute practical item that is also very decorative. I can't tell you a lot about it yet, but what I can tell is that I'll also be using one of my previous free designs to embellish this one so that it'll have a peacocky flavour :) Yes, I'll take any opportunity to add a touch of peacock feathery goodness.

French mini peacock feather free crochet pattern
Now let me tell you a little bit more about this Bamboo Soft yarn. It's is a Fingering weight yarn with a blend of 50% Bamboo and 50% Cotton. Due to the inherent benefits of bamboo fibre, the yarn is very versatile and ideal for making beautifully soft, lightweight garments, wearable accessories and home décor projects. It has a beautiful drape and that's one of the reasons I chose it for this project.
Another reason is that Bamboo Soft is a vegan-friendly yarn, meaning that the fibres and dyes used to create the yarn are 100% plant-based. It also features Scheepjes’ new Recycled Water logo, ensuring that all waste water has been safely recycled and repurposed during the production of this yarn. I think sustainability is so important and being able to work with environmentally-friendly craft products is something I want to focus on more.
As you can see in the shade card below, Bamboo Soft is available in a selection of 17 rich colours that all work very well together. I think I'll select about 6 different colours for my project. I'll show you more next week!

Blocking

To get the most beautiful result, the shawl needs blocking. Soak in lukewarm water, gently squeeze water out or roll it in dry towel to remove excess moisture. Pin out to finished measurements and let dry naturally.

Scheepjes Whirl and Whirlette yarn

Both yarns are a blend of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, which makes for lightweight and breathable shawls, or any wearables really. Whirl is a gradient yarn with a very generous twist so that it works up really quickly and it helps prevent splitting. Whirlette yarn comes in single colours, matching the Whirl shades.
The shade cards show all the 54 Whirl yarn cakes and 44 Whirlettes available.

Spring Mood with the Verdancy Shawl

Shawl wrap scarf crochet pattern the curio crafts room ravelry etsy Verdancy Shawl

I'm very excited to present my fourth shawl design: the Verdancy Shawl. It's a rectangular shawl measuring approximately 48 x 190cm, a very generous size so that you can wrap it around your neck a few times or drape it over your shoulders and let it flow. I think it's lovely for spring with its beautiful green shades and leafy stitch pattern. But of course it'll look fab in different colours too. My tester used a Whirl with purple shades and it looks stunning. She said the stitch pattern in combination with the purple hues reminded her of wisteria blossoms. I'll show you some pictures next time. And next time is next week, when I'll also have the free pattern for you and a PDF pattern for purchase in my Ravelry and Etsy shops that has a few extras like a chart and instructions how to adjust it to any size you like.

Shawl wrap scarf crochet pattern the curio crafts room ravelry etsy Verdancy Shawl

Talking of the stitch pattern...... it may look quite intricate, but I can asure you it's a beginner-friendly make and also quite relaxing. It's only a 12-stitch and 6-row pattern repeat, so once you've worked a few rows you'll be able to continue without a lot of counting. And all the colour changes in the Whirl yarn keep it really interesting and they will spur you on to get to that next colour change as fast as possible. Below you'll find some more information on the yarn used.

In my Ravelry and Etsy shops you can purchase a PDF version of this pattern.

The advantages of the PDF version are:
  • Clear layout with instructions in bullet-point format
  • Stitch Chart
  • Instructions how to adjust size

Scheepjes Whirl and Whirlette yarn

Have a good look at the gradient yarn. Soft green on one end and a beautiful saturated green at the other end and so many shades in between. The Scheepjes Whirl and Whirlette yarn I used are just ideal for a shawl like this one.

The shade cards below show all the 54 Whirl yarn cakes and 44 Whirlettes available.

Crochet Shawl Design with Leafy Stitch Pattern Coming Soon

My new shawl design is coming along nicely! Look how far I've already worked through the Whirl yarn cake. Always such a pleasure to work with this yarn as it works up so quickly and who doesn't like a quick result :) And the stitch pattern is so beautiful and relaxing. I think I'll have finished this shawl by the end of next week. After I've used up all the Whirl yarn, I'll start on the matching Whirlette and use that up as well. I think the total length will be just under 2 metres so it'll be long enough to wrap it around your neck snuggly or to drape it loosely around your shoulders and let it flow.

The stitch pattern is 12-stitch and 6-row repeat, so once you've worked a few rows you can just relax and see the pattern develop without having to count too much. It looks rather leafy don't you think? The gorgeous green shades are just perfect for it. The stitch pattern does require blocking to really open it up. What I do is I give it a good block every time I've added another 50cm or so, because I find it hard to block a piece as large as this shawl is going to be in its entirety.

I'm sure in a week or so I can show you the end result as I have only about 50 more centimetres to go. I'll leave you with some info on the yarn and hope to see you back here next week.
