Crochet Shawl Design with Leafy Stitch Pattern Coming Soon

free crochet shawl pattern the curio craftsroom scheepjes whirl whirlette yarn scarf wrap

My new shawl design is coming along nicely! Look how far I've already worked through the Whirl yarn cake. Always such a pleasure to work with this yarn as it works up so quickly and who doesn't like a quick result :) And the stitch pattern is so beautiful and relaxing. I think I'll have finished this shawl by the end of next week. After I've used up all the Whirl yarn, I'll start on the matching Whirlette and use that up as well. I think the total length will be just under 2 metres so it'll be long enough to wrap it around your neck snuggly or to drape it loosely around your shoulders and let it flow.

The stitch pattern is 12-stitch and 6-row repeat, so once you've worked a few rows you can just relax and see the pattern develop without having to count too much. It looks rather leafy don't you think? The gorgeous green shades are just perfect for it. The stitch pattern does require blocking to really open it up. What I do is I give it a good block every time I've added another 50cm or so, because I find it hard to block a piece as large as this shawl is going to be in its entirety.

I'm sure in a week or so I can show you the end result as I have only about 50 more centimetres to go. I'll leave you with some info on the yarn and hope to see you back here next week.

Scheepjes Whirl and Whirlette yarn

Both yarns are a blend of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, which makes for lightweight and breathable shawls, or any wearables really. Whirl is a gradient yarn with a very generous twist so that it works up really quickly and it helps prevent splitting. Whirlette yarn comes in single colours, matching the Whirl shades.
The shade cards show all the 54 Whirl yarn cakes and 44 Whirlettes available.

Whirl and Whirlette Yarn: The Perfect Combination for a New Shawl Design

free crochet shawl pattern the curio craftsroom scheepjes whirl whirlette yarn

I think by now you know that when I post a picture of Scheepjes Whirl and/or Whirlette yarn, I'm in shawl design mode. This time I've chosen lovely shades of springy green with the Sippy Sage Whirl and the Avocado Whirlette. I have a very relaxing stitch pattern in mind for a shawl that'll be perfect for early spring days. I plan on using all 1455 metres of the two yarns combined, but the shawl will be easily adjustable to any size.

I can't show you anything yet, but next week I'm sure I'll have some WIP pictures for you and in a few weeks' time I'll post the pattern on my blog as well. What I can reveal is that the shape will be a simple rectangle. This is my fourth shawl design and for each shawl I want a different shape or construction. So far I've made an asymmetrical triangle, a dragon tail and a circular shawl.

Whirl and Whirlette yarn

Both yarns are a blend of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, which makes for lightweight and breathable shawls, or any wearables really. Whirl is a gradient yarn with a very generous twist so that it works up really quickly and it helps prevent splitting. Each colour change (and there are many, which I love because it makes the gradient so subtle) is carefully tied to ensure the knot can be discretely hidden within your stitches. So don’t worry if you come across quite a few ”knots”, or rather “fluffy bits”, because that means one colour thread is replaced by another colour thread that needs to be worked into the yarn. The Whirlette yarn comes in single colours, matching the Whirl shades. Below you can see all yarns available.

Free Crochet Pattern: Star Beam Shawl in Whirl - Fine Art & Merino Soft Yarns

Star Beam Shawl Free Crochet Pattern The Curio Crafts Room Etsy Ravelry

Star Beam Shawl

A little over a year ago I designed three shawls all differently shaped (see below for photos). I really love designing shawls and I can tell you that I'm working on number 4, with ideas for two more. But while I'm busy experimenting with different shapes and stitch patterns, I also wanted to revisit the shawl that is my favourite - although it's very hard to say that as I really love all three. Yet the Star Beam Shawl is special to me as I just love the dragon tail shape.

In between designing more shawls, I wanted a relaxing make with a yarn I hadn't worked with before: Scheepjes Whirl - Fine Art in combination with Scheepjes Merino Soft (yarn details below). So I thought I'd write a quick blog post to show you the result and to link to the free pattern and premium PDF pattern in my shops in case you fancy making one for yourself.

Pattern

You can find the free pattern for the Star Beam Shawl in US/UK terms in an earlier blog post here and the DUTCH pattern here.

In my Ravelry and Etsy shops you can purchase a premium PDF version of this pattern (US/UK and DUTCH).
The advantages of the premium PDF are:

  • Chart
  • Close-up photos
  • Clear layout with instructions in bullet-point format
  • Same graphic design as all of my other PDF patterns
  • You support my work so that I can continue to publish free patterns and offer discount codes

Thank you!

Yarn details: Whirl - Fine Art & Merino Soft

As I mentioned already, I made my second Star Beam Shawl using a combination of Whirl - Fine Art and Merino Soft. Both are gorgeously soft yarns in a combination of 50% Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Microfibre and 25% Acrylic.
Whirl - Fine Art is a 460m yarn cake that comes in 12 different colourways, just as beautiful as the cotton/acrylic 1000m Whirl yarn cakes you're probably familiar with already. Whirl - Fine Art combines with Merino Soft, another Scheepjes' yarn collection. Below you see a very useful photo that shows which Merino Soft colours combine with Whirl - Fine Art. For my shawl I selected Whirl - Fine Art 661 Rococo and Merino Soft 643 Ansingh.

The first Star Beam Shawl I made was in Scheepjes Our Tribe, a much lighter weight yarn in a combination of 70% Superwash Merino Wool and 30% Polyamide.
