Java Peacock Feather Motif Blanket: Free JAYG Instructions

crochet peacock feather pattern free blanket instructions

The Java Peacock Feather motif was one of the first Peacock Feathers I designed and is one of the largest. It has always been one of my favourites and for that reason I also use it as my designing business' logo.

I knew that the Java motif would be very suitable as a join-as-you-go motif for a blanket but I never got around to actually adjust the design for that purpose. I was focused more on single motifs for coasters, garlands, appliques and bookmarks. So I was very happy and surprised when Cassie, one of my lovely customers, sent me a picture of a Java motif blanket! Isn't it stunning? And guess what.....the instructions for joining and for the trim are now available for FREE on Ravelry (details below).

Another thing that surprised me is that using different colour combinations can make the feather look so completely different. My feather and the one in the blanket may look as two dissimilar designs but they are definitely the same! I'm really inspired now to work them in the colours of the blanket too. Details on the yarn used can also be found in the free instructions.

In order to make this blanket, you'll first need my Java Peacock Feather motif, which is for sale on both Etsy and Ravelry, and then combine that pattern with the one available for free on Ravelry (for all the links see below). You'll need to adjust the final round of the motif to make it suitable for the join-as-you-go method, which is explained in detail in the free instructions. After that you can join as many motifs as you want.

  2. If I was to use 8ply would a size 4hook be sufficient?

    1. That entirely depends on your tension, which is different for everybody. I always make a swatch to see whether I like the density of the fabric created with a specific hook size. I personally use a 4.5 or 5mm hook with 8ply when making feathers but for a blanket in 8ply I would use perhaps a 5.5mm hook.

  4. I didn't make the blanket myself but there is yarn info in the joining instructions that were made by Cassie. Perhaps you could contact her for more details. The link to her Ravelry page is above in the blog post itself. Have a lovely day!

  6. Question on yarn. Your pattern calls for sport weight...would it be significantly different if I were to use a 4-weight instead? My hands really do not like the finer yarns. I'm hoping to make this in different colors for a pet/breed related health auction next year. Thank you.

    1. Hi Lori, I think that should work fine. I've made some of my feather designs using DK yarn. I do like yarn that is not too soft because I like a rather stiff fabric for the feathers so that they won't become too floppy. And what a lovely cause to make feathers for! Warmly, Christa

  7. So, the motif pattern is a paid pattern, but the directions for joining are free? I'm not complaining, just trying to get the correct info. Thanks in advance.

  8. This pattern is beautiful! What yarn would you suggest for this project? I would like to make a very large one basically the size of a twin size bed. Also do you know a good source for me to purchase yarn online?

  12. Hi Mechele, well, all I can say is that my post above clearly says that the Peacock Feather is a paid pattern. I have no control over links to my page posted by others and over their claims that the pattern is free. I'm really sorry that happens. Kind regards, Christa

  13. Was it free at an earlier time? I made a couple feathers and saved to my ravelry library but now shows in my library that I must pay for it. Very sad :(

  14. A total rip off, no free pattern. This is fraud and should not be allowed.

    1. Wow...I shouldn't be, I know, but I'm still always stunned at how rude some people can be online. The blogger has no control over links from Pinterest etc. Before the internet, we got all our patterns from shops or from books/magazines, and we had to pay for everything. Whereas now with the internet, some people expect all patterns etc to be free. These designers work for many hours on their patterns...why shouldn't they charge for them, it's their business?! This blogger also states clearly at the start of her post, that part of the pattern is NOT free. To say 'This is fraud', 'A total rip off'?! Really?? At approx 3 quid for the feather pattern and then the free joining instructions to make a blanket, I personally think it's a bargain! Anyway, thanks to the designer for your hard work, you are very talented. Ignore the whingers

  15. I'm new to crochet. Will this pattern work for a beginner or would you say it's advanced? Also, I'd like to make the afghan pictured with the vibrant colors'. Do you give the names of those colors in your pattern or are we supposed to eyeball those colors and substitute into the pattern accordingly?

    Thanks,
    Charmaine

  16. I recently purchased the pattern with the intention of making an afghan with the motifs. Motifs are all done but there are no instructions for joining them for the afghan. Are there instructions or a video link available?

  17. The Whoot website states this pattern is free, however, it appears it's just the "joining of the separate pieces" pattern which is free. If I am correct then I have followed link after link due to more misinformation. Please prove me wrong

  21. Nurse salaries in Australia are influenced by several factors, including experience, location, and the healthcare setting. Registered nurses typically earn between AUD 65,000 and AUD 85,000 annually, with entry-level positions starting around AUD 60,000. In metropolitan areas, salaries tend to be higher due to increased demand and living costs, while specialized roles, such as those in critical care or anaesthesia, can see earnings exceed AUD 100,000 per year. Overtime opportunities and shift differentials further augment earnings potential. Additionally, the rotation of shifts and weekend work may lead to bonuses, providing an extra financial incentive. As the healthcare system continues to grow, job security remains stable, contributing to overall job satisfaction. With benefits such as paid leave and professional development allowances, nursing in Australia offers a lucrative and fulfilling career path. Therefore, pursuing a nursing career in Australia not only provides competitive compensation but also ensures a rewarding professional experience.
