Peacock Plume Feather Shawl: New Crochet Pattern

 

I have a new free crochet shawl pattern for you! It's called the Peacock Plume Feather Shawl and it's the first time that I've let peacock feathers and colours inspire a shawl design. Of course there just had to be one in my collection of shawls :)

It's a broad rectangular shawl that's not too long, measuring approximately 49 x 137cm / 19.5 x 54in after blocking. Perfect to drape around your shoulders, but as you'll see in the photos below (more photos on my Instagram and Facebook), you can wear it in many different ways.

The yarn I used is one cake of Scheepjes Whirl in colour 769 Blackberry Mint Chip. It has such beautiful colour changes, just perfect for the stitch pattern I used. I've created lovely plumes that look like peacock feathers, hence the name Peacock Plume Feather Shawl.

Stitch Instructions

dc2tog: yoh, insert hook into st/sp indicated, yoh, pull up a loop, yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook. So you leave the dc unfinished and then you do the same once more: yoh, insert hook into st/sp indicated, yoh, pull up a loop, yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook. Then yoh and draw through all 3 loops on hook

Side V-st: Side V stitch: (1dc, ch1, 1dc) in same st
V-st: V stitch: (1dc, ch3, 1dc) in same st

Pattern Notes
This shawl is rectangular. It uses almost an entire cake of Scheepjes Whirl; I had about 4g left.

INSTRUCTIONS

With 4mm hook, ch107 + 1 turning ch = ch108
Change to 3.5mm hook

Row 1 (RS) 1sc in second ch from hook, 1sc in each ch to end, turn. [107 sc]
Row 2 (WS) Ch3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 1dc in each of the next 4 sts, ch2, skip 3 sts, V-st in next st, ch2, *skip 3 sts, 1dc in each of the next 8 sts, ch2, skip 3 sts, V-st in next st, ch2, skip 3 sts; rep from * to last 5 sts, 1dc in each of the final 5 sts, turn.
Row 3 Ch3, 1dc in each of the next 3 dc, ch2, *10dc in ch-3 sp of V-st, ch2**, skip first dc of the 8 dc made on prev row, 1dc in each of the next 6 dc, ch2, skip last dc of the 8 dc made on prev row; rep from * to end, ending final rep at **, skip first dc of the 5 dc made on prev row, 1dc in each of the next 4 dc, turn.

Repetition of rows Rep Rows 3-10 a further 16 times, then rep Rows 3-9 once more.

Rounding off row (RS) 1sc in each st and 2sc in each ch-2 sp to end.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Blocking

To get the most beautiful result, the shawl needs blocking. For blocking you can use Styrofoam and pins or special blocking mats. Spray with water and let it dry naturally.

Whirl and Whirlette yarn

Both yarns are a blend of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, which makes for lightweight and breathable shawls, or any wearables really. Whirl is a gradient yarn with a very generous twist so that it works up really quickly and it helps prevent splitting. Each colour change (and there are many, which I love because it makes the gradient so subtle) is carefully tied to ensure the knot can be discretely hidden within your stitches. So don’t worry if you come across quite a few ”knots”, or rather “fluffy bits”, because that means one colour thread is replaced by another colour thread that needs to be worked into the yarn. The Whirlette yarn comes in single colours, matching the Whirl shades. Below you can see all yarns available.
