Sway Wave Shawl – A New Crochet Pattern Inspired by the Sea

Sway Wave Shawl: Inspired by the Sea

At the moment, I’m diving into at least four new shawl designs, and the very first one I’ve finished is the Sway Wave Shawl. I feel so inspired to keep creating — shawls, wraps, scarves — each with its own little story and source of inspiration.

For the Sway Wave Shawl, my inspiration came from the sea. I’ve always loved being near the water; it feels both peaceful and humbling. The sound of the waves, the shifting colours of the water, the patterns in the sand, the wind on my face — all of it feels magical. I wanted to capture even a little bit of that rhythm and movement in a shawl.

That’s why I chose wavy stitches for this design. Two different wave patterns alternate across the shawl, each wave slightly different, just like the sea itself. And the colours — a soft ombre from purple to grey — echo the water’s moods, with purple being one of my favourite colours.

About the Sway Wave Shawl

The Sway Wave Shawl is a generous rectangular shape, but you can easily adjust it to any size — instructions for that are included in the pattern. It combines two alternating wavy stitch patterns that flow beautifully together.

I used a soft fingering-weight yarn — Scheepjes Whirl and Whirlette — which gives it a lovely drape, but the pattern is versatile enough to work in slightly heavier yarns too.

Skill-wise, I’d place this pattern in the adventurous beginner to intermediate range. If you’re comfortable with single, double, and triple crochets, plus a few special stitches, you’ll pick up the rhythm quickly. The instructions are written clearly in bullet-point format, and there’s even a handy table translating US to UK crochet terms, so you can follow along with ease.

Styling & Use

What I love most about the Sway Wave Shawl is its versatility. Even though it’s rectangular, it can be worn in so many ways. Draped loosely, it has an effortless elegance; wrapped snugly, it becomes a cozy shield against chilly nights.

I’ve included a few photos below to show some of my favourite ways to drape it. Each way highlights the gentle waves in the stitches, and I love how the shawl seems to move with you as you wear it.

This shawl also makes a thoughtful, handmade gift — a piece that feels timeless because it’s inspired by nature. I hope it brings the same quiet joy of the sea to anyone who wears it.

2016: The Year in Designs

For the last couple of weeks I have been thinking about and planning my crochet design goals for 2017. I've come to the conclusion that I really long to train my design "muscle" more and strengthen it in all kinds of directions. Of course I'd still love to design peacock-inspired items but I want to broaden my horizon and learn new techniques and design motifs that are a bit more versatile than peacock feathers. I'll tell you more about it in a short while. For now I thought it would be nice to look back and take stock of what I worked on in 2016.

For 2016 my goals were to publish a new paid pattern every month, do a few commissions and post some free patterns here on the blog. I didn't really plan this very well and kind of went with the flow, which resulted in a lot of procrastination and a feeling of not having done enough. So just now I made a few collages of all the designs I finished and that really helped in being a little less disappointed with my creative output. I may not have achieved the one-paid-pattern-a-month goal but I really like seeing all the items together and I am pleased with what I've created. There are actually a few more things I designed but I can't show them yet because two are commissions to be published in the first half of 2017 and for seven (!) others I still have to decide on a few small design options and finish writing and photographing the patterns. (I can't believe there are actually a total of nine more designs in addition to the 14 in the collages.....I had to keep changing the number for the ones I haven't finished yet because I had forgotten about quite a few).

Here's a collage of all the coasters I designed this year. The top left one is the Peacock Feather Petals Coaster; next to it are the Peacock-Style Pineapple Coasters (which is a free pattern); then bottom left are the Firework Coasters, a commission for the gorgeously-styled YARN book-a-zine; and bottom right is the Flower Patch Coaster, which is very textured with some of the petals standing up.*

This last batch of four is quite a miscelleneous group. The first design I published in 2016 was the Peacock Eye Necklace, a free pattern here on my blog; next to it is the Pop-Up Stool Cover and Peacock Feather, which I have to say is possibly my favourite design of the year; bottom left is another commission, this time for Little Box of Crochet; and the fourth one is the Little Feathers Garland.*

Then to round off, the two cushion covers I made. The one on the left I made over the summer and is also a free pattern; the one on the right was a commission for Crochet Now Magazine. It's called the Loopy Charm Cushion and can be found in Issue 6 (September). I will be releasing the pattern for it in my shops soon.

It was good to look back on all the work I did and I think it's really a shame that I cannot publish any pictures of my commission work for 2017 and the designs I've nearly finished. That would have given a complete overview of my (unplanned) design direction of the last 12 months.

Long to Wander Through a Dreamy Midnight Garden? YARN 2 Craft Book-a-Zine Will Take You There

I'm so excited writing this blog post because Scheepjes has just released issue 2 of their fabulous Craft Book-a-Zine YARN. In it you'll find crochet, knitting and sewing patterns accompanied by the most wonderful photos. It is really something different and I'm not just saying that because one of my designs is in it ;-) As some of you may know, I've been collaborating with Scheepjes as a blogger and designer for over a year now and I'm so proud that together with a fabulous group of other bloggers and designers, we have put together a wonderful collection of designs.

You may have seen the first issue of YARN that had many light and breezy patterns all linked to the overall theme of the SEA. This time the theme is Midnight Garden and it has many romantic, bohemian-style projects in blues, greens, mustard gold and pastels. But it's not only the projects that stand out, the photography and graphic design of YARN are also very special, creating a dream-like atmosphere that really sparks inspiration and creativity.

The photo below shows my contribution: The Firework Coasters. The yellow in them is really going to stand out when you use them as coasters for tea lights.

Other projects below are a gorgeous lapghan and several stunning shawls. These are just a few sneak peeks; you'll have to see the book-a-zine yourself to get that 100% dream-like feel.

Let me just give you a bit more information about YARN in general. It's a bi-annual publication (April/October but this is not set in stone) published by Dutch yarn manufacturer Scheepjes. Each issue has one specific theme and caters to crafters in general, not just the yarn lovers amongst us. Original sewing designs are also part of it as are interviews with artists who create very special work.
Scheepjes has really thought things through and at the back of the book has provided pages where you can write down notes, stick your swatches and loop yarn through specially punched out holes!

For the last few months I have been working on quite a few new designs for my shops without actually having published any. Or rather, without actually having finished any. It's a cute feather that measures about 6 x 8.5 cm / 2.4 x 3.4 in and can be used as an applique on hats, shawls, tablet sleeves, notebook covers, box lids and presents. Of course, you can also make a garland of as many feathers as you like. The pattern includes instructions how to make one. A Soft and Squishy New Crochet Project in Merino Soft Brush: Free Pattern Coming Soon

It's been a while since I crocheted anything non-peacock related so today I decided it's time for something completely different. I love working on my peacock designs, but it's not something I can do while watching TV. I really want to crochet something that doesn't require a lot of counting and that has rounds that take a while to finish. And besides, I have a few episodes of Poldark on the hard disk recorder, so I really need this new project ;-).

Today I'll just show you the yarn I selected for it and will keep you updated on progress once I've actually started what I have in mind. And I'll share the pattern here on my blog! The yarn is Scheepjes'* Merino Soft Brush, a brand new addition to the regular Merino Soft line you may be familiar with through The Last Dance on the Beach CAL. It's the same soft mixture of 50% Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Micro and 25% Acrylic but the Brush version has lovely soft tweed flecks "brushed" into it. I'm really looking forward to making something soft and squishy.

I selected 3 colours from the 7 available, all named after famous painters of course. So I've got Van der Leck, Breitner and Israëls to work with. For me, selecting colours is always the most challenging part of the design process; I'm very particular about it because colours really define the outcome, just as with painting really...... I hope to have a WIP to show you soon and in case you want to try Merino Soft Brush yourself (because you definitely need a new project, right?), it is available from Wool Warehouse and Deramores will stock it soon*.

My Crochet Pincushion and Scissores Fob Design for Little Box of Crochet

It must have been at least nine months ago when Amanda from Little Box of Crochet asked me if I would like to design something for one of her crochet subscription boxes. I was, and still am, very honoured by her request and couldn't really imagine that a lovely kit would be made based on a design of mine, also because I didn't have the faintest idea what to make. It shouldn't be too large an item but also not too small. A necklace? No, because I had just released a free pattern for one, the Peacock Eye Necklace. A garland? No, because another Little Box designer had already made a gorgeous one. Of course, I wanted it to be peacock-inspired because that's my trademark and I thought the Little Box subscribers would kind of expect something peacocky.

So I just started to design a very small peacock feather without having any idea yet how or if I was going to use it. The best way for me to come up with something new is to start playing around with colours and simply start crocheting and let it take shape, literally. When I had finished the design for the tiny feather, I received a message from Amanda saying she had had a brainwave and could I please design a pincushion. What a wonderful idea! I immediately pictured a pincushion decorated with feathers in my go-to Catona peacock colours. Scheepjes Catona is the yarn I use for all my peacock feather designs.

Next, I had to decide on the shape of the pincushion: squashed drum; flat bottom and domed top; triangle; ball? I tried out a few shapes and sizes but found that a simple round cushion looked best. Don't you agree?

The pincushion did not use up an awful amount of yarn so Amanda wanted something extra and asked if we could add one more feather to attach to a pair of scissors as a needle keep. I thought it would be even nicer to make a fob that echoed the pincushion. I certainly could use one because I'm always losing my scissors!

And now it's finally July and here's the lovely box with everything you need to make your own pincushion and fob with. Well, there's actually more than you need; there's also a lovely stitch marker and gorgeously coloured pins. It's a real goody box. Over on IG I've already seen lots of pictures of the box and I would also love to see your makes of course! Tag with #littleboxofcrochet.

Peacock-Style Pineapple Coasters: Free Crochet Design

Here they are, my peacock-style pineapple coasters in six different colors and three different edging colors. I think they've turned out quite funky and modern.

I guess that most of you are familiar with the classic stitch pattern that is called the pineapple. While leafing through my late grandmother's craft magazines from the 1970s the other day, I noticed that this pattern was not referred to as pineapple, but as peacock. While the pattern with the chain stitches in the center is definitely reminiscent of pineapples, the shape is very much that of a peacock feather, so I, being obsessed with anything "peacocky," needed no further excuse to design my own motifs. And since I wanted a set of coasters that I could hang from the hooks on the vintage dish rack I have in my kitchen, I went for peacock-style pineapple coasters.

I started by making a small ring so that I could hang the coasters from the hooks and then built the peacock pineapple onto that ring. Then I worked a nice edging in a contrasting color for a funky look. I think the modern-looking coasters make a nice contrast with the more traditional tableware.

Next week I will have the pattern for you in both English and Dutch. I can give you some of the yarn details now - if you haven't already read them in my previous post. I used Scheepjes Catona Denim for the coasters and regular Catona for the edging. Catona Denim is a nice thick and soft cotton yarn very suitable for this kind of project and the regular Catona is a mercerized cotton yarn with a lovely sheen setting off the other yarn very nicely. I'll give you the info on the exact colors I used with the pattern.

WIP: Sneak Peek of New Free Crochet Design

This is what I've WIP-ped up so far with those lovely balls of Catona Denim I showed you last week. Can you tell what it's going to be? And what do you think of the photo props? These cups are from my mum's tea and breakfast service and I'm slowly confiscating it by saying that I need one more cup or one more plate for blog photos (no worries, she doesn't use any of it ;-) It's such a coincidence; she collected this vintage Peacock set long before I ever designed anything peacock-related. It's so lovely!

Okay, back to my WIP. I've almost finished this little project and I'm really happy with how it's turning out. I also used some Scheepjes Catona with the Catona Denim for a beautiful finishing touch. I use Catona yarn, which is a 100% mercerized cotton with a wonderful sheen, for almost all of my peacock feather designs. It comes in 50 gr balls but also in 25gr balls so if you're working on a small project, this amount is just ideal.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I wanted a very specific item to adorn something else very specific. Well, that something else very specific are the 3 little hooks on my vintage enamelled plate rack. And what is going to be dangling from them, I'll reveal next week. Of course, I'll also share the pattern with you.

WIP: Sneak Peek of New Free Crochet Design

A Bag Full of Yarn Love and a Pattern to Share Soon

Happy Friday! Look what I've got in my bag.....and look at the bag too! It was a surprise gift from my dear friend Marca and it makes for such a good photo prop. These delicious balls of Scheepjes Catona Denim deserve to be shown off really well ;-)

The reason for this picture is that I'm working on a little something that I want for myself to adorn something very specific with and I'm going to use this lovely soft and relatively thick cotton yarn for it. So far I've mainly used mercerized cotton for my designs but I feel it's time to explore other types of yarn now. I selected Catona Denim because for this pattern - which I'm going to share with you in a while - I wanted a thicker and sturdier yarn and because I just love a bit of an ombre effect. Especially the ombre effect in the lighter colors can give a design that "vintagy" or faded look, which is something that I really like.

So, what do I have planned? Well......I'm not going to reveal what it is just yet but I can tell you that it is a classic stitch pattern design (with a hint of peacock) that I tweaked a little bit so that it has exactly the size I want and can serve the purpose I have in mind for it. It's ideal for beginners who've never tried this stitch pattern before. Check back next Friday for a little sneak peek!

For now, let's look at the yarn in a bit more detail. As I've already mentioned, it's Scheepjes Catona Denim, a 100% cotton yarn, sport weight, 5 ply. A ball is 50 gr with 125 meters/136 yards and comes in 18 lovely colors. Although I remained in my peacock colors comfort zone, for this project you can choose any color you like. Ch 2 on top of the magic ring chain (=1^st dc) and 15 dc in the ring, slst in top ch to close this round.

Total of 16 dc.

Ch 2 on top of magic ring.

Round 1.

Round 2

Start with a sc in any dc. 2 sc in next dc, *1 sc in next dc, 2 sc in next dc*. Repeat *-* all around. Slst in 1^st sc to close this round.

Total of 24 sc.

Round 2.

Weave in the ends. I recommend not weaving in the end of the magic ring just yet. Later on you will be making the peacock eyes stitches in the center opening and it would be nice if you could still tighten the ring a bit after you’ve done that.

Joining the peacock eye circles

The necklace in the tutorial pictures has a total of 24 circles: 11 on each side and 2 that dangle. Lay the circles out and start with a sc in any sc of the 1^st circle, 1 sc in each of the next 11 sc = total of 12 sc on one side of the 1^st circle,

ch 3,

sc in any sc of the 2^nd circle, 1 sc in each of the next 11 sc = total of 12 sc on one side of the 2^nd circle,

ch 3 and join the 3^rd circle; continue in the same way until you have joined the first 12 circles (11 + 1 dangling circle) on one side. The first 3 pictures show this.

Start joining the circles at the top left-hand side.

12 circles (11 + 1^st dangling circle) have been joined on one side.

12 sc on one side of the 1st circle, ch 3, 12 sc on one side of the 2nd circle and ch 3.

Join the 2^nd dangling circle:
24 sc (= 1 sc in each sc) around the circle, ch 3, 12 sc on the other side of the 1^st dangling circle, ch 3, join the remaining 11 circles.

11 circles on the right-hand side all joined on one side.

Close the necklace by attaching both strings of circles at the top:
end with ch 3 and then insert hook from back to front in very first circle and in same stitch you made first sc in and work 1 sc.
Cut yarn.

The join with 1 sc. Now you are going to join the other sides of the circles.

Start in the last circle you’ve just joined to the first one:
12 sc along the side, ch 3, 12 sc along the side of the next circle. Work your way down to the 2 dangling circles.

All the circles on the right-hand side have been joined on 2 sides up to the 2 dangling ones.

ch 3 on the last circle, which will now be joined to the first dangling circle by working 1 sc in the same stitch as the one you made the last sc in (see next picture).

The joins to the dangling circles:
ch 3, sc in same stitch as last sc made in 1st dangling circle, sc in sc next to that (=same stitch you made the first sc in)
ch 3, 12 sc along the side of the next circle and work your way up to the top.

The other join at the top:
ch 3 and then insert hook from back to front in opposite circle and in same stitch you made first sc in and work 1 sc.

Cut yarn and weave in all ends.

Peacock Eye Stitches in the Center

With a tapestry needle work 6 stitches into the center to create the peacock eye. A 40 cm / 16 inch thread is long enough for 6 stitches including ends. Start 3 sc from the middle and work over rounds 2 and 1 into the center opening. Weave in the ends.

Blocking

To block the necklace, you can use Styrofoam and pins, but you could also put a towel on your ironing board and pin the necklace onto that. Spray with some water and let it dry for about 12 hours.
